A letter from producers Dafnis Prieto & Eric Oberstein

September 14, 2017

Dear friends,

We're writing to thank you for your incredible support and encouragement over the past year, helping us make the Dafnis Prieto Big Band (DPBB) a reality. We want to express our gratitude for your belief in us and this new project.

We had an unbelievable experience launching the band in New York City at the end of August. Thank you to the audiences that came to witness the band's premiere, and to the wonderful musicians in the ensemble for their beautiful playing and contributions to the music.

The DPBB rehearsed for three days prior to its world premiere run at the world famous Jazz Standard in New York City from August 25-27. Press previewing the run from WBGO, The New York Times, WNYC, and WKCR can be found HERE. Here are some photos from rehearsal and the Jazz Standard.

Immediately following the premiere, the band recorded its debut album at historic Systems Two Recording Studio in Brooklyn over two days, featuring nine new compositions and arrangements by Dafnis. It was an honor to have special guests and mentors Brian LynchHenry Threadgill, and Steve Coleman record with us. Here are some photos, video, and a sneak preview of rough mixes of three tracks.

Our next steps are to mix and master the album, and prepare the record for its release in Spring 2018 on Dafnis' label, Dafnison Music.

We hope you'll consider making a tax-deductible donation to help us finish this project.

We're pleased to offer tiered giving levels at which you can lend your support, with attractive special rewards at each level.

Thank you for your consideration and any support you might be able to give.

We look forward to sharing this record with you, and bringing the big band to your city soon!

With gratitude,
Dafnis & Eric

Dafnis Prieto Big Band

Inspired to make his biggest statement yet, Cuban-born drummer, composer, and bandleader Dafnis Prieto is thrilled to embark on a new musical adventure with his new recording, his first big band album. Prieto has composed and arranged new works, showcasing his talents as a trailblazing composer while honoring his musical heroes, offering an artistic statement that will transcend time and culture.

That’s the magic of Prieto: He has the ability to offer compositions and arrangements that are distinctly him, but he craftily leaves room for pedal-to-the-metal improvisation from a truly great band.
